If the previous competency of “Evoking Awareness” is the most enlightening, then this next & final competency of the ICF will help the Coachee accomplish changes necessary to reach their desired goals. During a Coaching session, an enlightened Coachee may get overwhelmingly emotional about their new sense of awareness and discoveries. Such new learnings can be extremely life-changing. But in order for life-transformation to truly take place, those new learnings need to be put into practice. Without action, dreams become daydreams, and the unfulfilled & unsatisfying reality becomes a nightmare.


Take for example, a hungry individual watching a cooking video. He may have just understood how to solve his hunger, but if he does not start cooking, his tummy will not be satisfied. Or the skinny, average well-intentioned youth who desires a fit, muscular body. He can consume all the fitness & body-building videos he wants, but unless he gets exercising, no amount of longing or yearning will get his body into shape. In both cases, the individuals need to take responsibility & make action to satisfy their desires. Also in both cases, they may engage a chef or fitness coach to assist, guide & keep them accountable along the way.



In Life Coaching, the Coach is there along with the Coachee’s journey, whatever destination they are heading for. Along the way, they may encounter detours, distractions and perhaps even vehicle malfunctions. No matter the situation, the Coach facilitates growth by being a thinking partner. Has there been a change of destination? What needs to be done to get back on track? What have you learned from this experience? What would you have done differently? In addition to asking great questions for learning, the Coach also provides accountability. By provoking thought, evoking awareness, & facilitating growth, the Coach hopefully gets the privilege of witnessing & celebrating the Coachee’s transformation & turning their dreams into reality.



The following are 8 sub-points to this competency:

1. Works with the client to integrate new awareness, insight or learning into their worldview and behaviors.

 2. Partners with the client to design goals, actions and accountability measures that integrate and expand new learning.

3. Acknowledges and supports client autonomy in the design of goals, actions and methods of accountability.

4. Supports the client in identifying potential results or learning from identified action steps.

5. Invites the client to consider how to move forward, including resources, support and potential barriers.

6. Partners with the client to summarize learning and insight within or between sessions.

7. Celebrates the client’s progress and successes.

8. Partners with the client to close the session.
