HUMAN NEEDS & DRIVERS (CORE)

 20220616 Module 15

Key Idea: Life begins at WHY. Without it, we may just be merely existing without really living.

When I look back at my life, specifically at my mid- to late twenties, I would define that season as mostly existing, or reacting, rather than truly living life. I think it was mainly due to not having any serious lack in my basic needs, but also being too busy & preoccupied to truly understand my inner human needs & drivers. Life then was fast-paced, hectic and ever-changing, so I guess I was mostly just responding to my life situations.

According to Tony Robbins, “Change is automatic [but] Progress is not.” Reading that statement for the first time, I felt a switch turned on in my head. An “A-ha! Moment”. I have always thought of myself as being an adaptable person, who quickly adjusts to a new situation. But on further reflection, I wonder how much of it was really just reacting & surviving, without experiencing any true progress? According to Robbins again, “Progress is the result of conscious thought, decision, and action – and these are all internal, within ourselves.” What has happened in the past is no longer in my control. But what I can do now (being older, wiser & inadvertently slower) is to carve out time to really reflect on my situation, so that I can consciously choose my decisions and own my actions. That way, progress can be within my own control.

In class, we were exposed to some “Inner Game Strategies” for better reflection & Self-Coaching.

1. Quiet your mind

2. Imagine your Ideal outcome

3. Create Awareness - what are you noticing? (thoughts, senses, within body & also around you)

4. Open Choices.

5. Embrace Challenges.

6. Act Your Part - Steps to move forward, otherwise you’re just going to be an observer in life.

7. Trust the Process - Closely linked to everything about Coaching.

These are some great ways to created “centred-ness” and to start a Coaching session.

We also talked about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Human Needs.

And we were also introduced to Tony Robbins’ 6 Human Drivers. According to Robbins, every human person is driven by these 6 components, but at different levels of intensity and passion. This difference is very much influenced by our personalities and upbringing. Life experiences & traumas could also possibly alter our drivers at different seasons of our lives. But ultimately, it is the last 2 on his list (Growth & Contribution) that are considered “Higher” drivers that will bring greater happiness and satisfaction.

On a personal note: I took the online test and scored “Connection” as my main Driver. This means that while I am well suited to be a Coach - connecting with people, I have to be careful not to be influenced by other people’s opinions of me. I also need to take care with having intentional boundaries so as not to stuck at saying “no” to others.
