NEUROLOGICAL LEVELS (AWARENESS)
20220811 Module 21
Key Idea: Neurological Levels is one of the most powerful frameworks in the Coaching world that will unveil a deeper understanding and awareness for the Coachee.
Neurological levels is a model or tool based on behavioural sciences, that can help us to analyse our lives & situations from different perspectives. The idea is that every challenge a person is feeling stuck in, or every goal that you want to achieve is within one of these logical levels. Once we understand this model, we can use it to understand where we ourselves (and our coachees) are stuck or having a problem that needs overcoming.
The levels are arranged from basic on the surface, to the most significant at the deepest level of a person’s thoughts / logical levels. Imagine an onion that has many layers. The deeper the level at which change occurs, the bigger the impact on the individual and the effect on the surface levels. However, any change in any of the logical levels can bring significant impact as well.
1. Environment - Where, When & With Whom. Your physical surroundings & interactions.
2. Behaviour - What You Say & Do. It can also be about what you don’t do.
3. Competencies - Your Abilities. It relates to your skills, talents, strategies, resources, etc.
4. Motives & Attitudes - What Drives you. Your motive is your reason for doing & behaving, while your attitude is your mental & emotional position.
5. Values & Beliefs - What’s Important to you and what you believe about yourself.
6. Identity - Who You Are. Your roles in life. This is where your life’s purpose & meaning reside.
7. Model of the World - Your Reality. The chunks of information we retain each day becomes our reality. This affects everything we do: our state, beliefs, body & behaviours.
Knowing these Filters will accelerate new Insights for your Coachee, and help you Coach at a different level. And as the Coachee uncovers or unpeels the underlying insights from the layers, they begin to gain clarity and awareness. They are then able to take steps to reach the Outcome they want to Achieve.
As the Coach, be flexible and fluid. Remember that the Coachee may move effortlessly from one layer to another in their logical thinking, so flow along well. Help the Coachee develop new insights or empowering perspectives at every level, beginning with the surface and then going deeper.
